How to Customize a WordPress Website

Understand the roles of themes, blocks, page builders, templates, CSS, and plugins when customizing WordPress.

Updated September 9, 2026 • Independent editorial content

WordPress customization becomes easier when each tool has a defined job. Problems usually start when several tools control the same part of the visual system.

Theme

The theme provides the fundamental presentation layer and may also expose global styles, templates and patterns.

Block editor

Use native blocks for content and, with block themes, substantial site-wide editing.

Page builder

A builder such as Elementor adds its own visual controls and can manage pages or recurring templates depending on plan.

CSS

Custom CSS is useful for small, deliberate exceptions. Avoid using it to compensate for an unclear design system.

Plugins

Add functionality, not decoration by default. Each plugin increases the update and troubleshooting surface.

Best practice

Document where global colors, typography, templates and recurring components are controlled so future editors know where to make changes.
